Essays of Five Decades
| J.B. Priestley
| A splendid and generous selection, by Susan Cooper, of some of the best of Priestley's essays. These are full of wisdom and humour from a great literary all-rounder. The essays originally appeared in various earlier volumes: Papers From Lilliput, I For One, Figures In Modern Literature, The English Comic Characters, Open House, Apes and Angels, The Balconinny, Self-Selected Essays, Delight, Thoughts in the Wilderness, The Moments and Other Pieces; plus one essay that appeared in the Saturday Evening Post in 1964, and half-a-dozen pieces from the New Statesman in the mid-1960s. Susan Cooper, of course, followed her involvement in this book by writing a biography of Priestley, Portrait of an Author. Anyone who aspires to write for a living, or become a journalist, would learn much from a study of Priestley's essays.
