Blade of Amber
| A.M. Justice
| Taken during a pirate raid, young Victoria of Ourtown is sold as a concubine to Lornk Korng, the patrician Lord of Relm. A harrowing escape lands her in the home of Lornk’s enemy, Queen Elekia of Latha. At the urging of the queen, Vic joins the army and, in time, becomes the Blade, a soldier assassin renowned for cunning and daring. She also wins the heart of Elekia's son, Ashel, a minstrel who prefers drinking and gambling to fulfilling any royal obligations. Yet she cannot return the prince’s love, her own heart still bound to Lornk by hatred and desire. When Ashel is captured in a Relman ambush, Vic sets out on a mission of rescue and revenge. Along the way, she is given the powers of wizardry by the Kragnashians, a mysterious indigenous species. In the course of these adventures, Vic realizes she is being forged into a weapon. The question is, by whom and for what purpose?
Blade of Amber is the first volume of The Woern Chronicles. This epic tale reshuffles motifs from epic fantasy and fairy tales into a science fiction story about a smart woman and a handsome prince who become ensnared in a decades-long conflict between nations. Wrongs, revenge, rescue, and redemption form the keystone elements of this series set in the distant future, on a planet far from Earth, where the descendants of marooned space travelers must contend with the indigenous people—sentient insects standing five meters tall—even as they struggle among themselves for power and peace.
