| In 2495, the human-colonized galaxy is ruled by the Earth-based Hegemony, which ruthlessly enforces the "unity" of the human race. Entrusted with the (forcible) "re-integration" of the independence- seeking humans on Lenore, morally- conflicted narrator Maj. Karel Novacek's task is complicated by the discovery of another intelligent, space-faring race in the galaxy, and by the hidden agenda of his superiors. (And the plot twists only begin there.)
