| The town of Painters Mill is a sleepy, rural place. The citizens, both Amish and "Englsih" co-exist side by side with little trouble. Only once has the peace been disturbed - a series of brutal, unsloved murders which shattered the lives of an entire community over a decade ago. When the killing stopped, it left in its aftermath a sense of fragility, and for the young Amish girl, Kate Burkholder, a realisation that she didn't belong.
Now, sixteen years later, Kate has returned to her home town as Chief of Police. Her Amish background, combined with her big-city law-enforcement expertise, make her the perfect choice. Determined to put her past behind her, she embraces tsmall-town life and the characters that come with it.
But then, one night, the body of a young woman is found in a pristine snowy field with numernals carved into her abdomen.
Is this a new killer or something familiar - something personal?
As Kate investigates, she realises that her past has come back to haunt her and, unless she can stop the killer, she could be the next victim......
